iPhone Alarm Not Going Off or Too Quiet? 11 Fixes That Work

An alarm that doesn't ring is the worst way to start a day. The good news: it's almost always a setting. Work through this list once and you'll never have to wonder again.

You set the alarm. You're sure you did. And yet you woke up late, or to a sound so quiet it barely registered. Before you blame yourself (or your iPhone), know this: most "my alarm didn't go off" mornings come down to a handful of settings.

Here's every fix worth checking, starting with the most common.

First: what doesn't stop your alarm

A lot of people turn off Silent mode or Do Not Disturb at night, just in case. You don't need to. According to Apple, Do Not Disturb, the Ring/Silent switch and Silent mode don't affect the alarm sound. If you turn on Silent mode with the switch or Action button, or turn on Do Not Disturb, the alarm still sounds (Apple Support).

So if your alarm stayed quiet, the cause is somewhere else.

If your iPhone alarm is too quiet

1. Turn up the alarm volume (it's separate from media volume)

The volume you use for music and videos isn't necessarily your alarm volume. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and check the alarm volume:

  • On recent versions of iOS, look under Alarms and Timers. You can turn off Match Ringtone Volume and drag the slider to set the alarm volume on its own, or turn it on so alarms follow your ringtone volume (Apple).
  • On older versions, the alarm follows the Ringtone and Alerts slider. Turning on Change with Buttons lets the side buttons adjust it (Apple Support).

As you drag the slider, a sample sound plays so you can hear how loud it will be.

2. Check Attention Aware features

On iPhones with Face ID, Attention Aware features lower the volume of alerts when your iPhone detects you're looking at it (Apple Support). If your alarm seems to get quieter the moment you glance at your phone, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and turn off Attention Aware Features.

3. Check the wake-up alarm's own volume

If you use the Wake Up alarm from a sleep schedule (set in the Health app), it has its own settings. In the Clock app, tap Change next to your wake-up alarm, then look under Alarm Options to adjust its sound and volume (Apple).

4. Pick a louder sound

Some built-in tones are gentle by design. Open Clock > Alarms, tap Edit, tap the alarm, then tap Sound and preview a few. Short, high-pitched or rising tones tend to cut through better than soft melodies. Rotating between sounds can help too, so your brain doesn't learn to tune one out.

5. Make sure the sound isn't set to None

If your alarm vibrates but makes no sound, its sound is probably set to None. Open the Clock app, tap Alarms, tap Edit, tap the alarm, then tap Sound and choose a sound (Apple Support).

6. Know what StandBy does

When your iPhone is in StandBy (charging on its side), haptics for alarms are turned off (Apple Support). That's fine if you rely on sound, but if you count on vibration, don't use StandBy overnight.

7. Check the alarm itself

It sounds obvious, but these catch everyone eventually:

  • Is the alarm's switch on (green) in the Clock app?
  • Is it set for AM, not PM?
  • If it repeats, are the right days selected? A one-off alarm won't ring again tomorrow.
  • Did you accidentally delete it, or turn it off when it rang yesterday?

8. Check where the sound is going

If you have headphones connected, the alarm plays at a set volume through both your iPhone's built-in speakers and your headphones (Apple Support). Other audio devices are a different story, so if you fall asleep connected to a Bluetooth speaker or car, test your alarm in that setup.

9. Don't change your iPhone's time manually

Apple notes that manually adjusting the time in Settings, for example to change how a game's timers behave, isn't recommended and can affect alarms (Apple Support). Keep Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically on.

10. Restart and update

If an alarm that was working suddenly isn't, restart your iPhone and install any available iOS update in Settings > General > Software Update. Then set a test alarm for two minutes from now.

11. Using an alarm app? Check its permissions

Third-party alarm apps rely on the permissions you give them. Make sure notifications are allowed for the app (Settings > Notifications), and grant any camera or motion access its wake-up missions need. Open the app once before bed so you know everything is set up, and run a test alarm the first night.

If the alarm rings but you don't wake up

Sometimes the alarm does go off and you just don't remember it. You might switch it off or snooze it without fully waking, especially if you're short on sleep or a deep sleeper. We explain why in why you keep sleeping through your alarm.

Volume won't fix that. What helps is an alarm that can't be dismissed with one sleepy tap:

  • Put your phone across the room so you have to stand up.
  • Use a wake-up mission, like solving math or scanning a QR code in another room, so the alarm keeps ringing until you're properly awake. Our comparison of mission alarms shows which ones work best.
  • Add a second sense. Vibration and a flashlight alarm help in a dark room.
  • Limit snoozes, or turn them off. Here's how to stop hitting snooze.

Tiko does all of this in one alarm: missions you can't sleep through, over 300 tones, 13 vibration patterns, a flashlight alarm and snooze limits. You can try a mission on our homepage to see how it feels.

A 60-second bedtime checklist

  1. Alarm switched on, correct time, AM/PM checked
  2. Alarm volume tested in Settings > Sounds & Haptics
  3. A real sound selected, not None
  4. Phone charging and out of arm's reach
  5. A backup alarm for anything important

Frequently asked questions

Why didn't my iPhone alarm go off?

The most common reasons are a low alarm volume, the alarm's sound set to None (so it only vibrates), the alarm being switched off or set for PM instead of AM, or the wrong repeat days. Silent mode and Do Not Disturb don't stop iPhone alarms.

Will my alarm go off if my iPhone is on silent?

Yes. Apple says the Ring/Silent switch, Silent mode and Do Not Disturb don't affect the alarm sound, so your alarm still rings.

Why is my iPhone alarm so quiet?

Your alarm volume may be set low in Settings > Sounds & Haptics, and it can be separate from your media volume. On Face ID iPhones, Attention Aware features also lower alert volume when you look at the screen. Turning that off in Settings > Face ID & Passcode can help.

Why does my iPhone alarm only vibrate?

The alarm's sound is probably set to None. Open the Clock app, tap Alarms, tap Edit, select the alarm, tap Sound and pick a sound.

Does the iPhone alarm work in StandBy?

Yes, the alarm still sounds, but Apple notes that haptics for alarms are disabled in StandBy, so it won't vibrate.
