Why heavy sleepers sleep through alarms

A standard alarm can be dismissed in a second, and a half-asleep brain is very good at tapping a button and forgetting it ever happened. Deep sleep, a short night or a body clock that runs late all make that more likely. We dig into the causes in why you keep sleeping through your alarm.

So the fix isn't just a louder sound. It's an alarm you can't stop on autopilot.

What Tiko does differently

  • Wake-up missions. The alarm keeps ringing until you finish a task: math, typing, a QR or barcode scan, Object Hunt, Face Match, shaking, steps, squats or push-ups.
  • Loud sounds and vibration. Pick a sound you'll actually hear, plus vibration patterns from a soft Heartbeat to a full Siren.
  • Flashlight alarm. Your phone's torch can flash while the alarm rings, which helps in a dark room.
  • Snooze on your terms. Set the snooze interval and a snooze limit, or switch snooze off so the alarm keeps ringing until the mission is done.
  • Snooze Penalty (Tiko Pro). On supported devices, snoozing can block the apps you choose for a while, so a snooze actually costs you something.

Available missions and features can vary by plan and device.

Set up an alarm you can't sleep through

  1. Choose a get-up mission. For heavy sleepers a QR or barcode scan works best: save a code in the kitchen or bathroom so you have to walk there.
  2. Or wake your brain instead. If you tend to wake up and then drift off again, two or three rounds of math at Normal difficulty does the job.
  3. Make it loud. Choose a sound you can hear from deep sleep, turn on vibration, and add the flashlight if your room is dark.
  4. Limit snoozing. Set a low snooze limit, or turn snooze off completely if you always give in.
  5. Test it the evening before. Set an alarm for a minute from now and run through the whole routine once.

Habits that make waking up easier

  • Keep the same wake time every day, weekends included. A steady schedule is one of the most reliable ways to make mornings easier. Our guide on how to wake up early has a step-by-step plan.
  • Get daylight soon after you're up. Morning light helps reset your body clock.
  • Protect your sleep. Most adults need seven or more hours. If you sleep through loud alarms even after a full night, or wake up exhausted every day, talk to a doctor: conditions such as sleep apnea can be the cause. More in why you wake up tired.
  • Keep a backup alarm for flights, exams and anything else you can't afford to miss.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alarm app for heavy sleepers?

Choose an alarm that can't be switched off with a single tap, is loud, can vibrate and flash, and lets you limit snoozing. Tiko does all of this with wake-up missions such as QR code scanning, math and squats.

How do I stop turning off my alarm in my sleep?

Use an alarm with a mission that needs you to be awake, like solving math problems or scanning a code in another room, and keep your phone out of reach so you have to get up to stop it.

Is Tiko free?

Tiko is free to download on iPhone and iPad, with optional in-app purchases. Tiko Pro unlocks additional missions, sounds and features such as Snooze Penalty.
